We grow young people’s faith through teaching the gospel and nurturing a faith that sticks for life – through all we do! Our approach is to build trusting relationships, first with God, then with one another. After all, that is what makes a strong individual, family and faith community! We use many opportunities to learn and grow in faith through biblical study, prayer, meaningful conversation, play, community, and serving others as we focus on being disciples of Jesus.
The process of confirmation varies slightly from congregation to congregation, but the end goal is the same: to prepare people to boldly and confidently make promises to love and serve God, affirm your baptism and continue to live out your faith through the work of God’s church.
At Spirit of Joy we journey with you on a 2-year process of both Catechism (religious instruction) and Bible instruction, which we alternate each year. Confirmation is for 7th and 8th graders. is the affirmation of faith through our baptismal vow. Many of us were baptized as infants or young children, before we were able to make those baptismal promises ourselves. In baptism, parents make this promise:
“… to live with them among God’s faithful people, bring them to the word of God and the holy supper, teach them the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed and the Ten Commandments, place in their hands the holy Scriptures, and nurture them in faith and prayer, so that your children may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace.”
At a young person’s “affirmation of baptism”, Confirmands are asked to make this promise for themselves: “…to live among God’s faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord’s Supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the commands and example of Jesus as a “disciple of Christ” and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth.”
Each year we provide opportunities for our young people to grow in faith through different outings. We focus on building self-esteem, education about God’s love for them as God’s beloved, and building faithful relationships with God and one another. We are always focused on learning, growing in faith, following Jesus, and serving others in love.
